In April 2009, 220 horses, burros and mules (and counting – many mares are pregnant!) were rescued from starvation in Alliance, Nebraska. Most are mustangs, many originally adopted from the Bureau of Land Management. These animals are desperately seeking caring and knowledgeable homes that will ensure they never spend another hungry day. Read the latest press release of May 6th for more details on how you can help, whether or not you can adopt a horse. Some horses have had training but most are unhandled and will need love and patience to learn to trust and see humans as their allies and partners. If you think you may be interested in adopting, click here to meet the horses. All horses have been dewormed, treated for ticks and lice, microchipped, and Coggins tested. Stallions will be gelded before going to their new homes, unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian. The horses need hoof trims but not all are strong enough yet to sedate so adopters should ensure they have access to a farrier and veterinarian who can assist them. If you cannot adopt, please consider making a donation to Habitat for Horses. The cost of caring for these horses and supplying them with their initial care has been staggering and now they are moving to new temporary care facilities which will be another huge expense, so any donation is greatly appreciated, no matter how small. A huge thank you goes out to the many, many people who helped to get these horses to safety and are caring for them while they await new homes! |
